New models predicting conversational effects of telephone transmission on speech communication quality

چکیده
In the planning process of telephone networks, it is important to have estimates of the speech communication quality which can be obtained with specific network configurations, even before the network has been set up. For this aim, network planning models have been developed. They base quality predictions on instrumentally measurable input parameters of the transmission chain, and take conversational factors into account. In this paper, the most prominent and complete model, the so-called E-model, is presented in more detail. The underlying principles are discussed, and it is shown how new speech processing equipment (e.g. codecs) can be included in the model. Comparisons of model quality predictions to auditory test data show how conversational aspects are covered by the model, and where modifications can improve quality prediction output. An outlook identifies the parameters where work is still needed in order to use network planning models to reliably predict conversational impacts in modern network scenarios, and to estimate the influence of the transmission channel on dialogue system quality.

Conversational quality estimation model for wideband IP-telephony services
As broadband and high-speed IP networks spread, IP-telephony services have become a popular speech communication application over IP networks. Recently, the speech quality of IP-telephony services has become close to that of conventional PSTN services. To provide better speech quality to users, speech communication with wider bandwidth (e.g., 7 kHz) is one of the most promising applications. To...
متن کاملRecognizing Call-center Speech Using Models Trained from Other Domains
In this paper, we introduce a new conversational speech task – recognizing call-center speech – using data collected from Dragon’s own technical support line. We compare performance of models trained from conversational telephone speech (the Switchboard corpus) and models trained from predominantly read, microphone speech, and report on a series of experiments focusing on adapting the microphon...
متن کاملElements of interactivity in telephone conversations
The term “interactivity” has been defined in numerous ways in the context of communications, but a definition of interactivity as an instrumentally measurable parameter of conversations is still missing. In this paper, we approach this issue by applying a parametric analysis to telephone conversations recorded during speech quality tests. To this end, we extract the basic conversational paramet...
متن کاملA New Algorithm for Voice Activity Detection Based on Wavelet Packets (RESEARCH NOTE)
Speech constitutes much of the communicated information; most other perceived audio signals do not carry nearly as much information. Indeed, much of the non-speech signals maybe classified as ‘noise’ in human communication. The process of separating conversational speech and noise is termed voice activity detection (VAD). This paper describes a new approach to VAD which is based on the Wavelet ...
متن کاملMonitoring Speech Quality in Telephone Networks: An Overview
Monitoring speech quality in telephone networks is a two-step procedure. First, all data which are relevant for speech quality have to be measured during network operation. Then, models can be defined which calculate quality indices on the basis of the measurements. This talk will give an overview of monitoring approaches related to speech communication quality, which is one component of the qu...
